Why our Soap....

At Mel's Skin Laundry our handcrafted soap is made using only the simplest ingredients... making it simply better for you than the brand you find in the drug store or supermarket.

When you look at the label of your current soap, you'll see a list of  ingredients,  products you've never heard of, products that extend the shelf life of their soap and words that you've never seen before.  These chemicals create a soap that is drying and irritating to your skin.

Our handcrafted soaps are lovingly made in small batches using a traditional cold process method.  This allows the soap to keep the natural glycerin which provides natural emollience for your skin.  We carefully select the plant oils and skin nourishing butters and combine them with essential oils and skin safe fragrances and colours.  We hand mix the batches and our soaps slowly cure for 5 - 6 weeks, ensuring all of the essential nutrients from the oils are retained, producing a superior bar of soap that is luxuriously creamy and moisturizing.

At Mel's Skin Laundry, our products are free of animal products.  Contain no chemicals and are palm oil free.   Our soaps are crafted using only plant oils.

Our Ingredients

At Mel's Skin Laundry, it's important to us to let you know what ingredients are used in our products.   Below you'll find those ingredients. 

Distilled Water

We only use distilled water when creating our soaps.  This ensures there are no impurities in the water we use.  Distilled water is as pure as it gets.

Sodium Hydroxide

Sodium hydroxide, also known as lye, is an essential ingredient in the soap making process.  When sodium hydroxide flakes are mixed with a liquid, a lye solution is created.  This solution, when mixed with oils and butters, will cause a chemical reaction called saponification.  The result of saponification is a beautiful handmade soap.

Organic Olive Oil

Olive oil is obtained from the pulp of olives.

Olive oil is known for its healing properties as well as being a fantastic moisturizer.  It is also a great source of Vitamin E and other minerals.

Organic Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is obtained from pressing the flesh of the coconut.

Coconut oil is known for its lathering and moisturizing properties.  It is an effective moisturizer for all types of skin and helps prevent dryness.

Shea Butter

Shea butter is expressed from the pits of the fruit of the Mangifolia tree in central Africa.

Shea butter is gentle enough for babies and people with sensitive skin.  It soothes and softens dry, chapped skin, while nourishing all skin types.  Shea butter is known for its healing properties and is full of Vitamin E, Vitamin A and other antioxidants and contains a natural UV sun protection.  Shea butter moisturizes the skin, leaving it smooth, supple and soft.

Organic Hemp Seed Oil

Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant, through a similar process of obtaining olive oil.

 

Castor Oil

Castor oil is expressed from the seed of the castor oil plant, Ricinus Communis.

Castor oil acts as a humectant by attracting and retaining moisure to the skin.  It is lubricating and soothing to the skin and is rich in fatty acids.  Castor oil adds to the later of the soap and helps create lovely bubbles.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural plant oils that are extracted from various plants and trees.  Some plants contain essential oils in their leaves or roots, others in their flowers, fruit, stem, bark or seeds.  Each essential oil has a distinct scent, some we use on their own, others we blend.  We using only pure essential oils in our products, in small, skin safe quantities.  Essential oils are know for their positive healing, therapeutic and cosmetic properties.

Fragrance Oils

We use only fragrance oils of the highest quality and we use only those that are Cosmetic Grade and Skin Safe.  We use fragrance oils in our products, in small, skin safe quantities.

Colours 

We use a range of colurs in our products that are Cosmetic Grade and Skin Safe.  We use Oxides, Ultramarines and Micas.  Cosmetic Oxides are highly refined pigments, that are purified to make them suitable for use on the skin.  Ultramarines are natural colour pigments derived from mineral lapis lazuli.  Micas are a silica-based mineral.

For those who wish to have no colours in their soap we have created a Bare-Naked soap, which has no colours, and no fragrances or essential oils,
